Why Self-Care is the New Success Paradigm

Sample excerpt:

Why Self-Care Is the New Success Paradigm coverIn 1990, the Human Genome Project began, with scientists from around the world mapping the human genome sequence, and in 1993 the role of the project was expanded to study how genetics contributes to disease. At this point, most experts believed that the genes we inherit from our parents determine our health. However, by the time the project ended in 2003, what the researchers had found was surprising: There’s something above (or outside) the genes that has a greater impact on our health. In fact, estimates suggest that our genes may only control 5 to 10 percent of our health. The rest of our health—90 to 95 percent—may be determined by lifestyle factors, such as diet, exercise, beliefs, stress levels, exposure to toxins, and use of recreational drugs, alcohol, and cigarettes.1,2,3

I began studying epigenetics and nutrigenomics (how nutrition interacts with genes to affect health) in 2012. My mentors all said the same thing: “Your clients can eat the most pristine diet and take all the right supplements, and still be sick if they aren’t willing to deal with stress.”

This hit home for me, because every time I’d take on way too much in my life, a symptom would show up from my past, like a reminder to get back on track—and if I listened, I’d feel better. Over the years, I would learn to listen to my body’s response to stress and its response to self-care. Eventually, this knowledge changed the way I prioritize my life and how, as a health coach, I support clients in improving their health and well-being.

10 Day Sugar Detox

10 day sugar detox ebook coverSample excerpt:

Every year I get a few messages that go something like this:

“I ate too much of my kids’ Halloween candy and now I don’t feel well. Plus, I have a lot of sugar cravings now. How can I detox the sugar from my body?”

There we are…many of us in the middle of the fall season, with our clocks turned back and less daylight. This already reduces the amount of serotonin (happiness, calm hormone) in our brains. A lack of serotonin can sometimes create cravings for sugary carbs because it’s the starchy foods that send serotonin to the brain.

On top of this, we have the holidays coming. For many, this means an abundance of stress (preparation, time with family, travel, parties) and an abundance of sugary foods. Madison Avenue takes advantage of this with scare tactics of the weight gain that will surely come during the holiday season (officially, Halloween through New Year’s and interestingly, the darkest times of the year with the least serotonin!).

So I decided it would be great to do a 10-Day Sugar Detox. For the next 10 days, I’ll share tips on how to detox sugar from your mind, body and spirit. This will include natural kitchen remedies and easy practices you can do on your own or with friends.

Let’s get started!

Guided Meditation

This meditation can be used for healing and weight loss. Excess weight is a sign of inflammation. As you visualize healing your body, visualize inflammation dissolving. You can even visualize your body at your ideal weight as you do this meditation, for even better results. Just remember that if thinking about your weight is triggering, simply focus on healing and trust that as you heal, you achieve your optimal weight.
