Your Fluid Superhighway Beauty Aid

Beauty and lymphatic system expert, Linda Anne Kahn describes the lymphatic system is an intricate network supporting your body’s immunity, detoxification, and fluid balance. I also like to think of it as the sister to your circulatory system because without healthy lymph, you can’t have healthy blood and both are specialized forms of fluid connective tissue.

“The lymphatic system is a forgotten system,” says Linda Anne. She described a client who had been to 12 holistic doctors and none of them considered her lymphatic system as she described her symptoms.

Here’s the thing…if you support your lymphatic system, a myriad of health issues may be resolved because this fluid superhighway runs through your body from head to toe.

Interestingly, your lymphatic system resides just below your skin, so it has a lot to do with beauty as well.

In fact, often you’ll notice beauty-related troubles related to your lymphatic system before a health issue escalates. Let’s find out why!

Beauty Issues: Signs of Sluggish Lymph

One of the first things I noticed about highly stressed people in my corporate days is a faded look, almost as if they had no life force energy.

It would take me a few years to realize what was going on. Stress, poor diet, and chemicals in food and the environment deplete the body, clog your detox systems (like your lymphatic system!), and drain your life force energy.

Isn’t it interesting that when you nourish yourself from the inside, there’s a beautiful glow — a vibrant life force energy — that shines out? Health is beautiful. The billion-dollar advertising industry tries to tell us we’re not OK in a billion different ways — selling us chemicals in our personal care products and processed foods full of non-nutrients and chemicals. How could this feed our life force? How could this build our energy? It can’t. It only depletes it, requiring us to go back to their shelves for more. No longer.

Here are the beauty-related symptoms of sluggish lymph:
  • Acne and cystic acne
  • Dandruff
  • Dark under eye circles
  • Dry, flaky skin
  • Dry or oily scalp
  • Hair falling out
  • Itchy skin
  • Eczema
  • Oily skin
  • Psoriasis
  • Puffiness around the eyes or other facial swelling
  • Rosacea
  • Swelling, irritated skin

These can be early warning signs and an invitation to support your body’s lymphatic system.

Client Case: Psoriasis

Linda Anne had a client come to her with psoriasis all over her body, including on her face and head. Her skin was so red and irritated that Linda Anne could not work with essential oils right away. Instead, she focused on supporting her client’s full-body lymphatic system with manual lymphatic drainage and made recommendations for lymph nutrition, and colon hydrotherapy. She also worked with her client on spiritual and lifestyle habits.

Pretty soon, her client’s skin started clearing up. Linda Anne was able to apply an all-natural essential oil-infused oil blend (see below) and over the next several months, her client’s skin cleared up. Almost a year passed before Linda Anne saw her again. At that time, her client described having done so much better until she “fell off the wagon” with her diet, lifestyle and spiritual habits. She returned to Linda Anne to recommit to her healthy routines and was able to support her body back to health again.

Healing Happens Holistically

It’s not just one thing when it comes to healing. It’s a lifestyle. Healing is really an invitation to dig deep and step onto your sacred path – what you came here to do. It helps push you into the direction of answering that big question: Who am I?

To heal your lymphatic system – or any symptom related to inflammation or immune problems – it’s important to focus on holistic approaches. “Look at the whole body,” Linda Anne says. “Look at your life.”

Focus on solutions that reduce stress and allow you to nourish yourself with healthy foods, healthy beauty products (see below for ingredients to avoid), and stress-busting self-care.

In my work with clients, I’ve noticed that symptoms start to come back when you step off your path. Life tempts us, challenges us, and sometimes contains loss and trauma that are part of the journey. A return of symptoms is often an indicator that you’ve stepped off your path and it’s time to adjust, so you can get back on track. This is life loving you, reminding you to trust what you came here to do. A healthy lifestyle supports alignment with your greatest good. How cool is that?

A New, Lymph-Supporting Beauty Routine and Natural Beauty Products

By some estimates, the average person encounters at least 123 chemicals in personal care products like soap, shampoo, and lotion each day. These chemicals stress your body and lymphatic system.

Here are some of the major lymph-clogging ingredients to avoid:
  • Benzaldehyde
  • Benzyl Acetate
  • Diethanolamine (DEA)
  • Ethanol
  • Fragrances – important to know what this means because it’s often toxic chemicals
  • Linalool
  • Phthalates and Parabens
  • Polyethylene glycol (PEG)
  • Propylene Glycol – petroleum by-product
  • Sulfates – sodium laurel sulfate sodium laureth sulfate
  • Tetraethylammonium (TEA)
  • Triclosan – antimicrobial agent

Make sure to read the labels on your shampoos and personal care products. While there are many new, healthy personal care products on the market today, it can be fun, economical, and super healthy to make your own!

Lymph Massage and Essential Oil Beauty Recipes

“One third of your lymphatic nodes are in your neck, near your clavicle behind your ears, so your face is really important,” Linda Anne says. “Improving the lymph flow in your face and head can improve detox and cellular communication.”

Here are some key lymphatic massage tools and techniques:
  • Jade Roller Tool – a jade stone roller tool that gently rolls over your facial skin and stimulates lymph.
  • Gua Sha Tool – a jade, stone, or ceramic tool that can be used to gently massage your face or as a “scraping” tool for full body lymphatic support.
  • Your Fingers – your hands and fingers are a fabulous tool for lymphatic support!
  • Wooden Brush or Jade Comb – Combing your hair is a great way to stimulate your scalp, support your lymph and distribute natural oils through your hair. Using real wood to brush your hair is a whole different experience from using plastic. It can nourish and protect your hair. Both the wooden brush and jade comb are best done twice per day, once in the morning and once at night using the blends below.

How To Do Facial Massage To Stimulate Lymph

Linda Anne recommends using essential oils in a carrier oil (see recipes below) and massaging your face, scalp, and neck in the direction of your lymph flow. You can also massage acupressure points. This firms up sagging skin, helps reduce fine lines and puffiness, and promotes a smoother, more radiant complexion.

To support the lymph in your face and neck, apply your essential oil blend (see below) and use your jade roller, gua sha tool or fingers in a circular motion and lightly massage, following the lines in this picture.

Linda Anne’s Natural Beauty Recipes for Face and Hair

When it comes to carrier oils, look for organic, cold pressed oils. Depending on the condition, Linda Anne likes moringa oil, jojoba, tamanu, apricot kernel,  hazelnut, sweet almond, and fractionated coconut oils. Check the dates on your oils to make sure they have not expired because they oxidize (go bad) easily.

Dry Skin Recipe

6 – 8 drops Sandalwood Essential Oil (for dry, flaking skin), Myrrh Essential Oil (for dehydration and aging skin) or Frankincense Essential Oil (for dehydrated skin) (Note: Since sandalwood is endangered in India, look for sandalwood from Australia and Hawaii).

15 ml of carrier oil, like apricot kernel or jojoba oil.

Oily Skin Recipe

6-8 drops Juniper Essential Oil (for drainage), Ylang Ylang Essential Oil (to calm action of oil secretions), and Rosemary Essential Oil (to support circulation)

15 ml carrier oil, like hazelnut oil, jojoba oil, or kukui nut oil.

Rosacea Recipe

Rosacea is a disorder where blood vessels have enlarged and skin is read and swollen, Linda Anne explained. Rosacea can be exacerbated by heat, stress, and spicy foods. It’s important to be careful with the products you use, making sure they help calm redness and sensitivity. Be careful when getting a facial and make sure your esthetician really knows how to work with rosacea.

2 – 3 drops of German Chamomile Essential Oil, Geranium Essential Oil or Lavender Essential Oil.

15 ml of carrier oil, like aloe vera gel, tamanu oil, or jojoba oil.

Acne Recipe

6-8 drops Eucalyptus Essential Oil, Juniper Essential Oil, Geranium Essential Oil, or Tea Tree Essential Oil.

15 ml aloe vera gel (do not use an oil)

Healthy Hair Recipe

6 – 8 drops Rosemary Essential Oil, Cedar Essential Oil, or Peppermint Essential Oil (or a blend of them)

15 ml jojoba oil or argan oil.

  • Put this mixture in a glass bottle or jar. When you’re ready to do a hair treatment, put the bottle or jar into a saucepan of water and heat it up on low (do not microwave!) until warm. Make sure it’s not too hot to the touch.
  • Massage the oil into your scalp.
  • Put on a hair heating cap and then lie down and meditate or read for 20 minutes to allow the oil to set in.
  • Wash your hair with a detoxifying shampoo, to remove all of the oil from our hair.

Your Fingernails and Toenails Matter Too

Your nails are also connective tissue and their health can tell you something about your overall health. Linda Anne recommends avoiding nail polish with formaldehyde and looking at less toxic options.

“Always remove nail polish and take a break for at least a week between your next polish,” Linda Anne suggests. This allows your nails to heal and breathe.

She recommends avoiding acrylic nails and choosing gel nails instead.
