Nutrition Tips to Help Heal Autoimmune Conditions

Examples of Autoimmune Conditions

  • Celiac disease
  • Crohn’s
  • Diabetes
  • Hashimoto’s thyroiditis
  • Inflammatory Bowel Disease
  • Lupus
  • Food Allergies
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Multiple Sclerosis (MS)
  • Psoriasis
  • Rheumatoid Arthritis
  • Scleroderma
Other research is showing that conditions like autism, eating disorders, chronic fatigue syndrome and Lyme are autoimmune related as well.

Many times, doctors tell us that there is no cure for these conditions. Sometimes, even the treatments are barely managing symptoms. Has your doctor told you that nutrition has nothing to do with it? Let’s talk about some foods to eat and avoid to help bring your body and mind back into balance.

Foods to Consume

  • Bone Broth – Dr. John F. Prudden’s research showed that cartilage (found in bone broth) can turn around autoimmune conditions like osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, scleroderma, psoriasis, IBS, colitis, Crohn’s, MS and more. He used it effectively to resolve stage 4 cancer, herpes, shingles, mononucleosis, Epstein Barr and other viral infections as well. Bone broth can also reduce or eliminate cellulite and other fat disorders.
  • Healthy Fats – Focus on organic grass/pasture fed animal fats you could make at home, like beef tallow, chicken schmaltz, lard, raw butter, ghee or plant fats, like organic coconut oil and olive oil. Healthy fats satiate appetite, boost moods, aid in vitamin and mineral absorption, and balance blood sugar.
  • Cultured Foods – Raw, cultured foods are rich in probiotics, which help add good bacteria into our bodies. These good bacteria help with detoxification, digestion, boosting energy, reducing cravings and provide important vitamins and minerals. Sauerkraut, kimchi, kombucha and raw milk kefir and raw pastured cheeses are examples of cultured foods. You only need a small amount to get the benefits. Consider starting with a tablespoon with each meal.
  • Organ Meats – liver, kidneys, heart, and tongue are strange foods to us, but our ancestors ate them regularly for all of the critical B vitamins and minerals. Organ meats are strengthening and energizing. Consuming organ meats helps to promote nose to tail eating. Choose organic, grass or pasture fed organ meats.
  • Water – Hydrate with pure, filtered water or natural spring water or artisanal water. If you find you have to drink water all day and are not getting hydrated, you may want to investigate this because there could be an underlying issue.
  • Supplements – If you don’t have time to make bone broth or you want variety, some great options are: Vital Proteins Collagen Peptides (does not gel, so you can mix it into hot or cold beverages and it will easily dissolve), Vital Proteins Gelatin (when you want to thicken soups or get a nice gel for recipes), or Vital Proteins Cartilage Collagen, which Kaayla co-developed with Vital Proteins to help consumers gain the specific autoimmune and viral infection healing benefits of cartilage.

Foods to Avoid

  • Processed Foods – These foods often contain harmful ingredients like sugar, high fructose corn syrup, GMO ingredients (genetically modified, like corn and soy), gluten, MSG, chemical flavorings, and preservatives.
  • Sugar, Refined Sweeteners and Artificial Sweeteners – These sweeteners are addictive, create an acidic condition in the body, and spike blood sugar.
  • GMO Foods and Soy – Soy is not the health food people once thought it was! It is a hormone disruptor and most soy on the market is genetically modified (GMO). All GMO foods have been sprayed with the toxic herbicide, glyphosate, which has been found to be potentially carcinogenic and can create mineral imbalances in the body. To avoid GMO foods, look for organic foods instead.
  • Gluten, Grains & Starchy Foods – Gluten, the protein found in many grains, is problematic for many people with autoimmune conditions. In many cases, people with autoimmune conditions do better when grains and starchy foods (potatoes, sweet potatoes, parsnips, etc.) are removed entirely. Consider starting by removing gluten and then see how you do if you eliminate all grains and starchy foods for a couple of weeks.
  • Unfiltered Tap Water – Tap water contains fluoride, chlorine and residues from pharmaceuticals, among other toxicants that can harm the body.
  • Refined, Rancid, Processed Fats – Check the labels on all fats and oils. If the label says refined, avoid it. Refined fats have been excessively heated, which creates a rancid condition, which is then deodorized so that you can’t tell it’s gone bad. The way to tell if a fat is rancid is by smell, a burning taste in your throat, or color (e.g., a bad animal fat may turn brown). Avoid canola oil and vegetable oil.
