The TV Sleep Experiment: Want to Play?

Studies show that turning off the TV at least an hour before going to bed can lead to a better night’s sleep.

As much as we love TV, it is stimulating and wakes the body and mind up at a time when you want to start winding down.

Try this TV sleep experiment for just one night and see what happens. If you like it, you may want to make it part of your routine – or just use it as a technique for nights before that big meeting or business trip.

At about 8 pm, turn the lights on low and play soft, relaxing music.

Get Out Your Book

Get your favorite book or write in your journal – this is a great time to read something inspirational, something that makes you feel good or write about your feelings. Get anything weighing on your mind out of your head and onto paper. Once it’s on paper, close your eyes and say “I release this.” See it leaving your mind – just let it evaporate.

Have some great conversation with your spouse, significant other and/or kids (if your kids are willing to try the experiment).

I remember a time when the power went out during a storm. My parents made popcorn and we all talked and read by candlelight. It was one of the best family nights I remember from my teen years.

Get into bed about 30 minutes before you normally would. Read something relaxing if you are not completely tired (put the Stephen King or Dean Koontz away, please!).

Take Note of How You Feel the Next Day

  • How did you sleep?
  • How do you feel?
  • What was the following day like?
  • Is this something you’d like to do again?

If you end up going to bed earlier, you can either capitalize on the extra sleep – or get up earlier and use the extra time to exercise, meditate or journal. These are all things that help you have a more peaceful, centered day. Try it and see what you think!
