To Louise Hay, With Love

Our beloved Louise Hay passed peacefully on August 30, 2017. She touched the lives of millions of people. Louise broke a lot of barriers, reminding us that no matter what our background, no matter what our circumstances, no matter what our age or health status, we can change our thoughts and therefore, change our lives.

Today, we honor the life and work of our beloved friend and teacher. Best-selling Feng shui author and long-time friend of Louise’s, Terah Kathryn Collins and I are going to share some of our favorite behind the scenes stories after over a decade of travel, laughter and friendship with Louise.

Fire Tiger Energy – Fierce and Benevolent

Louise was a Fire Tiger in the Chinese medicine system of astrology. Historically, this energy was feared in women because it was like strong male (yang) energy in a female body. This energy is extraordinarily fierce, likes to break the rules, and is very clear. At the same time, it’s very kind and generous. If you look at Louise’s life and how she got out of a traumatic childhood, broke the rules of thinking, and supported millions of others to change the way they think so they could change their lives, we can see how incredible this energy supported her path in life.

Good Words Create a Good Mind

In the I Ching, a book of Chinese divination, it is said that language can kiss or can kill the quality of life. And in the Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) Native American culture, there is a principle of creating a “good mind.” Louise really focused on these healing principles in her work. She listened deeply to the words she and others used and focused on creating a good mind through better, more positive thinking and living.

In fact, even science is proving what Louise Hay has always taught about how everything is food and thoughts (“If you get your food right and your thoughts right, everything else falls into place.”). The science of epigenetics (what happens outside our genes that determines 95% of our health), is shedding light on the fact that the 95% of our health that we have in our own hands is influenced by our food, thoughts, and lifestyle.

8 of Louise Hay’s Favorite Tips for Transforming Your Life

#1. – Stop Criticizing Yourself and Others

Accept yourself as you are, right here and now.

#2. – Stop Scaring Yourself

How often do you scare yourself with your thoughts? Instead, think of something you love, like yellow roses, your favorite music, a pet, or anything that makes you feel better. Train your mind to create a new routine because you can’t think of something scary and something you love at the same time. Remind yourself, “I am safe.”

#3. – Be Kind, Gentle, and Patient with Yourself

You don’t have to do everything at once. Go at your own pace and remember, you don’t have to overload yourself with goals just to motivate yourself. Be kind to your mind and accepting of yourself. Remind yourself: “I am doing the best I can with the understanding and awareness I have right now.”

#4. – Praise Yourself

Praise yourself a lot. You’ve been putting yourself down for too long. If you were raised with negative thinking, you may think you have to criticize yourself to behave or get ahead, but you don’t have to do that. Praising yourself will take you much further in life and you’ll feel better along the way.

#5. – Support yourself

Really support yourself in what you’re doing and trying to accomplish. Reach out to others for support. None of us are capable of doing it all by ourselves all the time. We all have areas where we are great or where we need support. Or there are times when we are going through challenges and need help. Get a support buddy (or buddies)! This is an act of loving yourself.

#6. – Love Yourself

Love is the great miracle cure. When we really love ourselves, everything in our life works, including our health.

Tell yourself: “I love you, I really love you.”

#7. – Do Your Mirror Work

Mirrors reflect back to us our feelings about ourselves. They clearly show us the areas to be changed if we want to create a loving, fulfilling life. The most powerful way to do your affirmations is to look in the mirror and say them out loud.

#8. – Take Care of Your Body

This is a loving act. Feed your body nutritious foods. A car doesn’t run well if you put Twinkies and Coca-Cola in the tank. This doesn’t work for your body either. Learn about healthy foods and find out what makes you feel your best. When you get your thoughts right and your food right, everything else falls into place. Especially if you’re not feeling well, you need every bit of nourishing fuel to nourish your cells.

On this night in 2016, we had a wonderful dinner at the University Club, overlooking San Diego. We laughed so hard this night because Louise liked our waiter's shoes so much that she touched them. "Did you just touch my shoes?" he asked. Then he said, "I can tell this is going to be my favorite table tonight!" Later, a group of women came up to Louise to tell her how radiant she looked.
