Episode Summary Re-cap

Do you make backup plans for your backup plans?
Have you been getting through life by controlling everything? Do you make backup plans for your backup plans? Do you freak out when you don’t know the answer or how to take the next step? Maybe you are energetically sensitive, highly sensitive or constantly anxious? Energy Therapist, Amy B. Scher and Heather reveal energy healing and Native American medicine techniques to let go of control, step into your natural power, and experience the confidence of going with the flow.

Amy_B_ScherSpecial Guest: Amy B. Scher

Amy Scher is an L.A.-based author and leading voice in the field of mind-body-spirit healing. At 25 years old, Amy’s health began declining as she faced late-stage Lyme disease. Her symptoms baffled doctors, but she kept seeking answers for her recovery, leading her to India, stem cell therapy and several other treatments. But even with extensive treatments, she wasn’t able to get and stay completely well until she turned inward for healing – addressing her emotions, beliefs, and who she really was at the core.

Today, Amy is an author, teacher and energy therapist. She uses energy therapy techniques to help those experiencing illness and those in need of emotional healing. Amy has been featured on healthcare blogs, CNN, Curve magazine, Elephant Journal, Cosmopolitan magazine, OM Times, and the San Francisco Book Review. She was also named one of Advocate’s “40 Under 40” in 2013. Amy has presented to groups such as the Department of Psychiatry at Stanford University and teaches at retreats and conferences nationwide.

Amy has written several books on health and healing, including: How To Heal Yourself When No One Else Can: A Total Self-Healing Approach for Mind, Body, and Spirit and her most recent book, This is How I Save My Life.

Most importantly, Amy lives by her self-created motto:

When life kicks your ass, kick back.

Top 5 Reasons for Needing to Be in Control

#1 – To Feel Safe

While we hear a lot of negative comments about “control freaks,” at the core is a deep desire to feel safe. When you realize this, you can take a hard look at all the places where you don’t feel safe and work with them. In some cases, you may find that you rarely feel safe at all. At the heart of Louise Hay’s teachings is the concept that as we learn to feel safe, we heal. Both Amy and I found this to be true in our lives as well. After experiencing decades of mystery illness and thinking we’d found our answers to physical healing, it was learning to feel safe – even in challenging times – that created the deepest healing.

#2 – To Keep Others Safe

On the one hand, we may have a positive desire to protect others, however, it crosses the line when it becomes judgmental or controlling. Amy described this as trying to help (or over-help) others or having them do things your way because ultimately, you only feel safe if help is delivered in the way you think is appropriate.

#3 – Fear of Failure

Again, this can start from the positive desire to be successful, but it becomes a negative if your leading drive is to avoid failure. The mistaken belief is that failure makes you less than in some way, or that others won’t love or accept you if you fail. In reality, failure is a part of life and often creates some of the best lessons for growth and future success.

#4 – Fear That the Sadness Will Never End

I had a client who felt that if she even allowed herself to cry, she’d never stop. Amy said she felt this way too, once she “lost control” and started crying uncontrollably every day during her healing journey. When we are overtaken with emotion, it can feel endless, and yet, once we let go and release, it always has an end. Our ancestors knew this even better than we do because they watched the patterns of nature closely. Nature would rage and storm, sometimes with great destruction, and then the sun would come out and everything would heal. This is part of the cycle of life and these natural patterns make up our ancient forms of medicine, like Chinese medicine, Ayurvedic medicine, and Native American medicine. Focus on nature next time you see a storm and trust that if you have a deep emotion, it’s the release that holds the key to emotions moving and completing their cycle.

#5 – To Be Right

While being right might feel good, and even safe, it’s one of the biggest sticking points in relationships. Always having to be right can tip into never being able to see other points of view, or not having an open mind. There’s also a healthy opportunity to agreeing to disagree, which allows you to do things your way and another person to do things their way. What if you are wrong? If this question makes you feel queasy, you may feel the need to be right and this could be behind the need for control.

11 Signs and Symptoms that You Need to Be in Control

  • You are the easygoing, happy, calm one who is never sad or angry
  • Worried that if you let go, you’ll fall apart or if you cry, you’ll never stop
  • Perfectionism
  • Only feeling safe if you have a plan or know the outcome
  • Feeling others are out to get you
  • Always feeling like you have to have an answer
  • Being over-helpful or pushing help onto others
  • Inability to make decisions
  • Asking everyone else’s opinion instead of listening to your intuition
  • Joining with another person or group to feel safe, even if they don’t align with your values
  • Anxiety

3 Easy Solutions to Let Go of Control So You Can Heal

Energy Therapy

Amy shared some of her favorite, easy energy therapy techniques for times you are feeling so stressed that it’s zapping you of energy. Anyone can do these at any time. Try them and see how you feel:

Thymus Gland

Thymus Gland

Thymus Tap

Use your flat hand or finger tips of one hand and tap on your thymus gland, the spot in the center of your chest (see picture). Your thymus gland is responsible for immunity and is often referred to as the heart protector. Your thymus is related to feeling safe.

Amy suggests just tapping gently, without feeling like you have to say anything at all. The important point here is to make sure you aren’t focusing on pushing the negative or scary feelings away, just tap and trust the process.

Fingertips on Forehead

Rest your fingertips on your forehead and breathe deeply. Again, don’t focus on pushing the negative energy away as you do this. Just breathe. In this technique from Eden Energy Medicine by Donna Eden, you are holding your neurovascular points, which Donna calls the “Oh my God” points, as you touch your forehead with your fingertips. This is very soothing to your emotions, allowing you to think better.

Native American Medicine

The Medicine Wheel is a wonderful framework in Native American culture that can support you in resolving fear, grief, stress, trauma, and health issues. The medicine wheel represents the circle of life, within which are four directions (North, South, East, and West), which have different meanings depending on different cultural interpretation. Imagine yourself in the center of the wheel or circle. When you are in the center, you are in control. As you look to each direction, you learn the lesson that direction holds. For the purposes of this exercise, you will look to the direction of the North. The North is considered spiritual, a time of the elder who is wise and has walked the circle of life. The North also represents winter and Creator, God or Source energy. This is where we look when we don’t know what else to do. When looking to the North, we ask to be led and we have faith that we’ll be shown the right direction in which to move at the right time.

As you look to the North, affirm: I trust that I will be led in the direction of my highest good. Thank you. The more you practice trusting you will be led and that you don’t have to have the answers right now, the more you’ll find yourself guided in the right direction. Nutritional Support

If you are in the situation of our caller and you find yourself so stressed that you feel exhausted and achy, there’s a nutritional solution that can support you. When you’re under stress, your body dumps minerals and B vitamins – the very nutrients it needs to feel calm, safe, grounded and protected. This sets up a vicious cycle of stress because as you dump these nutrients, you feel even more stressed out.

Here’s an anti-stress elixir that can replace lost minerals (electrolytes) and boost your energy, while supporting you in feeling safer and more energized:

  • 8 – 16 oz. filtered water
  • 1 teaspoon 40,000 Volts (wide base of minerals with extra magnesium and potassium, which are key electrolytes for balance)

Try this first thing in the morning and if needed, have another one at 3:00 pm.
