Hay House author, Jean Haner, has worked in the field of subtle energy for 30 years. A natural intuitive empath, she is able to physically feel and work with the energy of people and places. Highly sensitive as a child, she easily absorbed the energy of others, as well as being overly-affected by the energy held in environments. But through years of training and experience, Jean transformed her sensitivity into the power to work with energy on a very high level. Because of her personal experience with both the challenges and strengths of being an empath, she is well known as a compassionate and effective teacher, and leads retreats where you can learn how to clear the energy of people and places.

Jean has written 4 books – two on Chinese face reading: The Wisdom of Your Face and The Wisdom of Your Child’s Face, which reveal insights our facial features give us about our inner nature; Your Hidden Symmetry, a book that helps you discover who you are and your true calling in life; and her newest book: Clear Home, Clear Heart: Learn to Clear the Energy of People & Places.

Jean teaches and consults internationally, providing fascinating and practical information that can be put to immediate use in your life.

9 Practical Tips for Clearing Negative Energy

Have you ever entered a room and it just didn’t feel right, yet you couldn’t explain why? Are you naturally comfortable with some people and stressed by others?

We’ll reveal how you are influenced by the invisible energy of people and places around you. Learn why difficult experiences in your past could still weigh you down and keep you from being a creative force in your life. Discover how to clear negative energy as a gentle, powerful way to release old stress.

#1 Learn How To Feel Energy

Energy can be picked up by any of your senses. We’re all affected by the subtle energy around us. Studies show that when music is playing in a restaurant, people chew to the speed of the music. Researchers have also found that people react to the subtle hum of electricity in the background. You may have been able to tell there was a fight in a room you walked into because you can feel the energy.

Most people are so distracted that they don’t notice the energy they are picking up on. Begin to pay attention to your senses. What are you seeing, hearing, feeling, tasting, touching or picking up? If you begin to sense that you feel off, uncomfortable, or have a physical or emotional symptom, that is a perfect time to pay attention and get curious.

#2 Think of Energy as Information

If you are highly sensitive or have been told you’re “too sensitive” all your life, you probably pick up information all the time. It may even feel uncomfortable, draining, or overwhelming. In order to work effectively with the energetic signals you receive, it’s critical to think of energy as information, instead of fearing it.

If you walked into someone’s house who was cooking a curry meal and you smelled the curry, you’d just think, “oh, that’s the spice they are using.” You wouldn’t freak out and feel concerned. What if you could look at all energy this way? What if, each time you sensed something, you reminded yourself, “this is just information.” Reframe by reminding yourself: this energy is here to tell me something, not to harm me.

#3 Be Curious

Ask yourself, what is this information here to tell me? Tune into your body with curiosity. Think about who you were just with, where you are, what you were just thinking about. When did the feeling or symptom begin? Ask yourself what you think this might be about. If you don’t get an answer right away, it’s okay. Just trust that the information you need will come to you. See if you can have fun with the mystery and magic of working with energy, rather than feeling afraid or overwhelmed by it. The more your practice this process, the easier it will be do decipher the energy you are sensing.

#4 If It’s Not Yours, Don’t Own It

It’s not uncommon to feel something and think it’s yours. Your emotion, your pain or symptom. You may think it’s something that you did wrong or your fault. However, most of the time, energy you pick up has nothing to do with you. The challenge is, when you sense energy, you may really think it’s yours because you can feel it so strongly. See if you can go back to #3. Ask yourself some questions.

Ask: “Is this mine, or is it from someone or something else?”

With practice, you may find you immediately sense who/what the energy belongs to. Once you do this, allow yourself to let go of the feeling or symptom. It should dissolve once you recognize it’s not yours. If it doesn’t, you can use the clearing process you learn in Clear Home, Clear Heart: Learn to Clear the Energy of People & Places.

#5 Don’t Get Lost In The Energy You Pick Up. Wait 90 Seconds

There’s a distinction between feeling an emotion and getting lost in it. If you tune in to your friend’s sadness about their divorce, it can be too easy to get caught up in feeling so sorry for them, or to remember your own divorce, and then get personally flooded with emotion. If either of those happens, it’s like falling out of the boat into the water. You become so awash in the feeling that you start to drown in it and then you’re no longer in balance and available to clear.

Instead, think about a doctor treating a patient in crisis. They don’t get caught up in their patient’s panic, or stressed by their own painful memory about the time another patient suffered. They maintain a calm attitude, being compassionately present, but not letting their own emotions run away with them. If they did, they’d not be able to make good decisions about the treatment.

When you have an emotion, it only takes 90 seconds for it to be processed through your body and flushed out of your blood stream. The only reason you would continue to feel anxious after 90 seconds is if you are making the unconscious choice to run that program again. Neuroscientist Jill Bolte Taylor described the solution: “By paying attention to the choices my automatic circuitry is making, I own my own power and make more choices consciously.”

This is what clearing trains your system to do, but without the struggle it normally takes to try to deal directly with your internal programming.

#6 Trust Your Senses

Many times, even the most intuitive of people can second guess themselves when picking up on energy. Sometimes we feel we need more evidence. Other times, the energy may contain information we don’t want to pay attention to (e.g., maybe a relationship isn’t right for us, but we wish it were).

If you don’t trust your senses, you won’t be able to feel confident in your intuition. Use affirmations like, “I trust myself. I trust my senses. My intuition is my best guide.”

#7 Clear: Practice Good Energy Hygiene

Clearing is like cleaning up stuck energy that has built up. Whether the energy has built up in a person or place, you can clear it, so that it dissolves and no longer affects you.

Doctors tell you that if you wash your hands regularly, it reduces the risk of germs causing illness. The same is true for clearing. It’s kind of like regular hand washing to keep you feeling well.

When you clear, you use a pendulum, which signals your body that you are ready to clear. There are a total of six energy fields that we clear one at a time during this process. Clearing is as powerful, as it is gentle. Its subtle approach circumvents any resistance in the other person’s system, and prevents you from trying to work with too much at any one time. You can learn all the steps for clearing these fields in Clear Home, Clear Heart: Learn to Clear the Energy of People & Places

#8 Nourish and Ground Yourself

We take in energy through our nervous system. Energetically sensitive/highly sensitive people often end up having what feels like “frayed nerves” because of so many years zinging their nervous system with so much energy. You can support your nervous system by adding minerals to your water and using real sea salt or pink Himalayan salt. My favorite liquid mineral supplement is Andersen’s Sea MD.

Anderson’s contains a wide base of minerals and you can add 2-3 drops to each glass of water throughout your day. Minerals help to ground and support your energy.

If you have digestive issues, you may want to consume bone broth to support your digestive system and add grounding protein and minerals. Bone broth is anti-inflammatory and boosts your energy and immune system, which can really help ground your energy.

If you are feeling overwhelmed, going outside in nature, feeling the leaves, breathing in the air, noticing the sights and sounds, putting your bare feet on the ground – this is very grounding and can often help to clear negative energy.

#9 Put Out Your “Closed For Business” Sign

One of the great aspects of learning clearing is that you start practicing working with and dissolving stuck energy. As you become familiar with this process, you begin to become aware of the ways you pick up energy and how energy affects you. You can also create boundaries around when you are subject to picking up energy. For example, you can tell yourself: “I’m open to clearing energy right now.” And then you can stop taking in energy by saying, “I’m putting out my closed for business sign now.”

Using a pendulum for energy clearing is wonderful because it reminds you when you have set the intention to clear, then when you put the pendulum down, you are setting the intention that you are closed for business. Set the intention that you get time off of clearing, so that you can relax and get some rest and self-care. This is especially important to do before going to bed at night!

Doing clearings is a training for you to develop a new way of being within your own life. Every time you clear a stress held in someone’s energy, you’re welcoming that feeling without resisting it or losing yourself in it. And at the same time, you are learning to do that for your own feelings, too.

As you practice knowing, It’s just a feeling; it’s just information when you clear someone else, you re-program your system to automatically respond from that place to your own feelings too. You may find that you fall into reactions less often and give yourself more time for conscious choice.
