Hidden Nutrition Secrets of Our Ancestors

Our ancestors knew how to prepare corn properly by soaking it with ash (minerals from the earth) to release important nutrients like niacin and tryptophan.

When this important step was lost, along with the knowledge of using ash in cooking, the end result could be niacin deficiency. Niacin is an important B vitamin.

I wonder if this niacin deficiency was then passed on to future generations, altering the DNA and creating a susceptibility to niacin-deficient health issues, including severe niacin deficiency (pellegra). Here are some symptoms to take note of:

  • Diarrhea and digestive issues
  • Mood and memory issues: anxiety, depression, bipolar, anger, irritability, violence, dementia (related to low serotonin)
  • Fatigue
  • Skin problems (and photosensitivity/sun sensitivity)
  • Swollen mouth and tongue
  • Alcoholism
  • Cirrhosis (liver problems)
  • Diabetes

When we look at health issues today, our medical system forgets to go back to our ancestral diet and look at what we used to eat and how it was prepared. They forget to look at how the processed food system robbed us of critical nutrients and preparation methods. And they seem to teach us that these “diseases” have mysteriously come about. And that today’s synthetic medications can “cure” or “manage” the symptoms.

Let’s Take a Moment to Remember Our Ancestors and How They Did Things

To look deeper at how the earth provided what we need. How, when we lived closer to the earth, cooked together, taught each other how to prepare foods -when this was a gift and a skill and not some “housewife strapped to a kitchen” task. When cooks were medicine people. When farmers were soil shaman. When women held the secrets to creating and sustaining life through tending the earth and hearth.

Let’s Take This Time to Remember When Food Was Medicine

Science is wonderful, but it forgets the people and their ways in the rush to study pieces and parts and congratulates itself for proving one minute detail after another.

Go back to your oral history, your gardens, your kitchens, your people and your intuition.

Go back to Mother Earth for your healing.
